Lake House Project: Building a Vision, One Thoughtful Decision at a Time
When my client acquired a piece of lakefront land, he didn't just want a structure—he wanted a carefully crafted retreat that would serve his family for decades with minimal maintenance demands.
This became my largest and most collaborative project to date. Because it was a second residence, every decision needed to balance quality with practicality. I developed the property piece by piece, ensuring each phase was done right before moving to the next.
I designed for reality, not just aesthetics. A metal roof and HardiPlank siding provide durability against the elements with virtually no upkeep. Anti-frost hose bibs connected to the well system allow the house to be winterized in seconds—a small detail that makes a significant difference when you're not there year-round.
The heating system reflects the same thoughtful approach: a wood-burning fireplace as the primary source, with secondary heating strategically placed in the mechanical room, bathroom, and bedroom for reliable comfort. The garage is completely sealed from both levels of the living space—proper building science that protects air quality and energy efficiency.
Inside, I created something special. Cathedral ceilings open up the space, and a catwalk leading to the front of the house frames an unobstructed view of the lake. I'm told it's become his wife's favorite place to write—a quiet perch overlooking the water where inspiration comes naturally.
This is what happens when a client trusts you with their vision over the long term. Piece by piece, decision by decision, we built not just a house, but exactly the retreat they imagined—practical enough for easy seasonal living, beautiful enough to inspire creativity, and built to last a lifetime.
